Twelve letters. Three perspectives. One falling kingdom.
Their stories arrive in your mailbox — the real one.
Valdenmarch was held together by oath-magic sealed in blood and ink. The oaths are failing. The kingdom is eating itself. Three people on different sides of the collapse are writing letters they're not sure anyone will ever read. You're the one who receives them.
I carried the sealed dispatch to the garrison at Kelworth as instructed. The commander read it in front of me, which they are not supposed to do. His hands were steady but his breathing changed.
He asked me how many riders I had passed on the south road. I told him: none. He said that was the wrong answer.
They billeted me in a room that overlooked the old Voel foundations at the edge of town. I could see the black stone from the window. The locals have built a market wall that runs right up to the threshold and stops. Not one brick crosses the line.
I am to carry a reply back by morning. They would not tell me to whom. The seal is one I don't recognize.
